On the whole, a fairly decent period romance that never quite overcame its gn.chevzlier. Contrary to what we sometimes see in romance, the hostility between them was not a disguised attraction. While there, he meets the nephew of the matron who owns the estate, John Seward.

It was hard not too see the effects the war had on both characters. I liked the contrast between the two heroes. Chevalier ex Michael McCready lives in two worlds.
I had a great, great time reading this book. It’s a book which is ultimately about hope. I remain firmly convinced that the ending could have been happier without taking away from what had already happened.
I could almost feel the chill in the ground as Michael tends the garden, and see the lost look on the faces of the young soldiers in their hospital wards.
No trivia or quizzes yet. It IS a 5 star read! Both characters were well represented and the dept to them was very good. Don’t be that selfish keeping your talent away: The characters are strong and lovingly portrayed; the setting, both physical and historical, is authentic and vivid.
However, a couple of positive reviews make me curious, especially from one who also has hesitation to read period piece. Michael helps John to recover physically, and in return John helps Michael to recover his love of medicine, his self-worth and confidence. The healing process is slow, and takes up the majority of the book, and there’s no romance until the second half.

I’m going through this phase pf I choose MM books based on the cover, that is to say that I’ve been avoiding those awful, trite covers gn.xhevalier stock photo-ed hunks leering at me from atop some incomprehensible background. Once a promising young medical student, Michael buried his dreams alongside the broken bodies of the men he could not save. So much life, and healing touched each of the characters primary and secondary which really helped keep everything in perspective.

I totally agree with everybody that those two chapters are letting the story down. I was engaged with earthh story from beginning to end. It’s a story of healing of getting to know each other.
They both struggle to vy their feelings and can be unpleasant and self-absorbed. How were they going to survive the horror their lives had been? The most obvious one is the effect of WW1 on the characters. A long-time student of history, she is particularly interested in helping to tell the hidden stories that are only now being rediscovered. It would be very easy to make a whole lot of assumptions about Michael from the first few pages of the book, but they are all blown away as the book progresses.
